Chemotherapy is used for the treatment of cancer cells but there are chances for its side- effects also. Different chemotherapy drugs can give different side-effects. Every human body is different and will respond to chemotherapy in a different manner. Some people may face very few side-effects while others will suffer a lot. Almost all the side effects are only for short period and will certainly disappear once the treatment is stopped. The areas of the body that are generally affected by the treatment of chemotherapy are lining of the mouth, the digestive system, hair, skin and bone marrow (this is the soft material that fills the bones and prepares new blood cells). These are those areas where normal cells divide and produce.
It is always suggested to consult your doctor or chemotherapy nurse to know more about the side-effects that can be caused by the chemotherapy treatment as they are aware of the drugs you are consuming. However the side effects of the chemotherapy treatment can be unlikable but they should be compared with the benefits of the treatment. It is very important to tell your respective doctor or nurse that if the treatment is making you feel sick. This may be help them to make necessary changes in the medicines you are consuming or changes can be made in your treatment that may reduce the side effects associated with it.
As it is already discussed that side effects of chemotherapy treatment includes hair loss, mouth sores, nausea and vomiting, pain, constipation, and diarrhea but it can also cause blood related problems. This may include low number of white blood cell count (neutropenia) which means low number of infection fighting cells in the body; it can also reduce the number of red blood cell which can cause anemia, can also lessens the number of platelet in the body which can give rise to the problem of thrombocytopenia. The short term side effects are acute and are curable but the long term one is permanent. These side effects can be the reason for the inconvenience and discomfort of the patient and can lead to his/her death also.
